Reducing Drunk Driving Deaths in Hawaii County – Progress and More Action Needed 2012.  Released November 30, 2012

This report documents that drunk driving is the leading cause of fatal traffic crashes in Hawaii County.  The report titled “Reducing Drunk Driving Deaths: Progress and More Action Needed “ was recently released by North Hawaii Outcomes Project.  Between 2002 – 2011,  65% of fatal crashes in Hawaii County involved drunk driving or drugged driving. “The saddest part about these deaths,” according to the report author, Dr. Sharon Vitousek, “is that 100% of the deaths from drunk driving are preventable.”  Other key messages: Too many people die from drunk driving traffic crashes in Hawaii County. Reducing traffic deaths and injuries is a shared responsibility.
